BFC CST running pilot project for mental health

The upcoming pilot programme – the collaboration between Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, The Wellbeing Network Hounslow, West London Mental Health Trust and One You Hounslow - has been confirmed for 10 November 2016.

The pilot includes a walk and run Couch to 5K programme at the Osterley Sports and Athletic Centre and a football project at Goals Centre Osterley.

Participants of the Hounslow Hawks FC project, aimed at residents with enduring mental health conditions, have reported improvements in their mental health due to increased confidence and self-esteem. They have also reported weight loss, reduced medication use as well as a sense of achievement, and above all, having fun and making new friends.

Michelle Nielson, who runs the mental health programme for Hounslow Hawks and Brentford FC, said: “Football is a great way to promote social inclusion and break down barriers to reducing stigma associated with mental health plus there is overwhelming evidence that exercise is beneficial for mental health; it reduces anxiety, depression, and negative mood, and improves self-esteem and cognitive functioning.”

The 10 week Couch to 5k programme starts on
Thursday 10 November 2016, 11am – 12pm, Osterley Sports and Athletic Centre, 120 Wood Lane, Isleworth TW7 5FG.
