Brentford FC CST girls reach the EFL Girls Cup Southern Finals
Girls from Waldegrave School reached the penultimate stage of an exciting national football competition - the Kinder+Sport EFL Girls Cup and were just one step away from playing at Wembley Stadium.
With only eight teams left in the competition the girls represented Brentford FC at the Southern Regional Finals and competed against Bristol City, Reading and Luton Town.
A round robin group stage started the competition off and the girls were great, finishing as first place to set up a clash with the fourth placed team Bristol City. With the tremendous effort made, Bristol City ran out as winners, beating Brentford FC 2-0 and were the winners in the final beating Luton Town.
Congratulations to Bristol City in the Grand Finals at Wembley Stadium!
The competition is six-a-side for girls aged under 13 and is organised on behalf of The English Football League by The English Football League Trust. Each of the 72 Football League clubs run a competition for their local schools, with the winners representing their club and playing in their colours, through various stages on the road to Wembley. Each club’s winners represent the club at area and then regional stages, culminating in a grand final prior to the Checkatrade Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium in March.
Waldegrave School, 3 months previous, had won the local competition that was organised by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust. 16 schools and teams participated with Waldegrave School winning to progress into the next round, the Area Finals.
The Area Finals, hosted by Millwall FC Community Trust on Wednesday 11th January 2017, was an exciting day for the girls. Ten teams participated and were split into two groups of five. The girls were fantastic and beat Charlton Athletic, Crawley Town and AFC Wimbledon, Brighton and Hove Albion and Fulham to progress into the Southern Finals.
Congratulations to the girls of Waldegrave School for performing brilliantly in the Kinder +Sport EFL Girls Cup!
