Roger first attended our Brentford FC Community Sports Trust Deaf football session at Goals Soccer Centre in 2013. He was 7 years old at the time, very shy and nervous. He tried to join in the training session with the other deaf children but he struggled to and preferred to watch with his mother.
He had never seen a deaf football training session in his life before. He didn’t realise there were other deaf children who played football.
After a few months, he decided he wanted to join in the session, which was particularly good, because his parents would drive him from outside London to take part! He was very eager and enthusiastic and was desperate to learn new skills and techniques. Our lead coach Ben Lampert (deaf coach with BSL) slowly encouraged him to get more involved, helped him develop his confidence and improve his communication.
Today, aged 9, Roger is still attending the BFCCST regular training sessions, is very confident and also plays for a mainstream hearing club, St Albans Rangers Under 10. In fact, he is so enthusiastic that he also trains with Westminster Lodge Futsal, has occasional extra one to one sessions with a deaf coach and joins in with his after school club at Heathland Deaf school. His biggest challenge is to continue learning how to best communicate when he plays in matches with hearing children. Through BFCCST involvement, Roger has learned various football skills and techniques including dribbling, passing, shooting and ball control.
The BFCCST Deaf Programme has enabled Roger to access regular deaf football sessions in a comfortable, relaxed environment for over 3 years and as a result, both his football skills and his self-esteem and confidence have improved markedly.
Our aim is to continue helping other young deaf people like Roger to take part in regular sports activities and learn valuable life skills whilst doing so.
