On Monday evening, more than 70 people joined the Trust at our Clubhouse Café for an event with Michael Caulfield exploring connection, community, and the courage to talk.

In what was an honest and impactful evening, Michael talked about his journey growing up and how he became a sports psychologist, leading into his eight years working for Brentford FC.

Presented from the bench that Michael had installed at Brentford’s Jersey Road training ground, the evening was filled with stories and anecdotes from Michael’s own life, with the common thread of the power of talking and listening.

Trust and Support Each Other

During the evening, Michael referenced quotes and memories from Brentford players past and present, including former captain Christian Nørgaard, who once said, “Michael, this is where we got to know each other, trust each other and support each other.”

Michael also explored the power of connection, the strength of community, and how simple everyday actions can make a big difference. With poignant discussion and questions from the audience, the event highlighted the importance of talking and how we can all support each other.

Reflecting on the evening, Michael said, "On Monday evening, the Community Sports Trust showed why Brentford is a unique, caring, community-based club. It beautifully illustrated the power of football, community and belonging, and to be part of it was truly special, surrounded by special people. Brentford at its very best.”

Together Against Suicide

Brentford FC is one of ten clubs taking part in the Premier League’s suicide prevention pilot programme, which aims to provide support for fans experiencing suicidal thoughts.

This initiative will see the Club and Trust use its platforms and community outreach to raise awareness of suicide and how it can be prevented. Working together, we will seek to reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking behaviours. This will include providing fans and the wider community with opportunities to hear from experts at monthly events, as well as the launch of an awareness campaign encouraging people to talk.

Sadly, suicide is an issue that affects people of all ages and from all backgrounds. Statistics show that every 90 minutes someone in the UK takes their own life, and that one in four of us has experienced suicidal thoughts. Football brings people together and Brentford’s campaign, Talking is the Best Tactic, highlights the importance of conversation and encourages fans to take the time to talk to one another.
