Staff from Brentford FC Community Sports Trust's Young Carers Project recently attended a celebration event with Co-op to receive £2,707.92 as part of its Local Community Fund.
The Young Carers Project was selected as one of Co-op's community causes in November 2023. Over the last 12 months, every time Co-op members purchased selected products and services, 2p for every pound spent went to the shopper and Co-op matched it to give the same towards nominated community organisations and local casues.
Huge Benefit
Kathryn Sobczak, Young Carers Manager at Brentford FC Community Sports Trust said, “Thank you so much to Co-op and the Co-op members who chose us as their local cause. This money will be of huge benefit to the project and will mean young carers in the local area are able to have much-needed breaks from their caring role, as well as taking part in fun, new activities that they might not have the chance to do otherwise”
About Young Carers
Ealing and Hounslow Young Carers Projects is run by the Trust and supports young carers between the ages of eight and eighteen who live in the London Boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow. The Young Carers Project provides information and advice, fun activities in school holidays, weekly youth clubs, specialist workshops and one-to-one support. The project is a chance for young carers to have a break from their caring role and to meet other young people who are in a similar situation. We aim to make each session a place where young carers can have fun and support each other in a safe environment.
How Young Carers Brings People in the Community Together
The project supports young carers with their health and wellbeing. Being a young carer can impact a young person's mental health. Many of the Trust’s young carers say they suffer from anxiety as a result of their caring role. They can also feel very isolated. Some of our young carers do not have much or any social interaction outside of school due to their caring role. This may be because they are too busy carrying out their caring role or the person they care for is unable to take them out, particularly if they are younger. Young carers often feel tired and stressed and may not be finding time for themselves. Giving the young carers opportunities to have respite, meet other young people and have fun is essential for supporting young carers and improving their wellbeing.
