Mini Olympics keeps kids occupied during lockdown

Earlier this year Brentford FC Community Sports Trust teamed up with housing provider A2Dominion to host a Mini Olympics challenge for all ages in our communities. The goal was to bring families and communities together to do something fun and active over the summer.

The Trust put together mini Olympic bags containing balls, bean bags, cones, colouring pencils, a skipping rope, and a whole range of challenges and competitions including:

• NHS skipping challenge: to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the NHS A2Dominion challenged children to skip for at least 72 seconds.

• Olympic bake-off: the Trust asked residents to create the most imaginatively Olympic-themed cake.

• Wordsearch: this tricky wordsearch included only Olympic-themed words.

Mrs Osmani, mum of Ibraheem from West Ealing, said:

“He really enjoyed the challenge and making the cake, especially as there was no school due to lockdown.. It has been a wonderful, educational experience which was arranged really well. The gift bag was a very good idea too, which my son has been using.”

With the Trust delivering weekly sports sessions to children across west London prior to the lockdown, Communities Engagement Manager – Graham Goodden – believes the Trust had to be imaginative in keeping children active during the lockdown.

He said:

“I knew when the first lockdown happened that hundreds of children and families would be struggling without school. Working closely with A2Dominion, we developed a comprehensive pack of physical activity and educational resources – illustrating how you can still bring communities together virtually.”
